The Tool Barn

Planning the Fence

Before you get started, check local zoning and building codes.  Be sure that there are no restrictions in your homeowners association rules.  Observe all property boundary setbacks and utility easements. It may be a wise idea to have a Land Surveyor mark you property lines so that you do not inadvertently build "your" fence on someone else's property.

With a drawing of the land (commonly called a "plat"), mark off where  the fence should be.  In addition, ensure that the positions of gates, crossing and other features are on the plat.  If you are crossing any underground utilities, call to have these marked.  After the plan is complete, "walk the fence" to make sure the plan is realistic.

Have the fence rolls dropped off close to where they will be installed, preferably on the highest spot.  It's much easier to drag the rolls downhill than uphill.
