Preparing for the tongue and groove boards
Before starting, sand the exposed face of the paneling.
Use a fine grit paper of 150 or 220. While some places will
need sanding after installation, it is much easier to sand while
on the workbench rather than overhead. Use a palm or orbital
sander. The purpose of this sanding is to remove any minor
imperfections. Do not use a coarser grit or a belt
sander.
Because the ceiling joists are rarely
perfectly flat, you can either cover with sheetrock, as shown
here, run a string perpendicular to the joist and add nailing strips
to ensure a flat surface. The nailing strips can be 1 x 2
furring strips or similar wood. Be sure to nail them securely,
otherwise you will have difficulty nailing the paneling.
Around the outer edge of the room, add a 2 x 2 nailing strip at the joist
level. This will provide a surface for the edge of the board to be nailed.
