Hello. I am a pro painter from outside of Chicago.Yes, ideally a primer would be nice, but I don't think most of you are going to roll a ceiling with noxious oil based primer. Get yourself a 1 and a 1/4 inch nap roller, (for rough surfaces), and any type of latex paint you are comfortable with. I reccomend a satin finish just to seal the darned stuff up so the cobwebs don't stick to it so readily. Two coats may be needed. This is messy, messy, messy. It will literally rain paint on you. By a lot more paint than you think you need. In my experience, some of the popcorn will come off but not a lot. Don't overwork the paint and you should be fine. Cover everything!
